Let's recap: What is a 'tarot year card'?

For each year, we have a corresponding tarot card, which can offer insight into the invitation of the year, for all of us collectively.

The 'tarot year card' for any given year can be derived by adding each digit of the current year and reducing it down to a number below 22 (which is the number of cards in the Major Arcana).

That number will have a corresponding tarot card, which will be the card of the year, representing the lessons we can experience, generally, in any given year.

In essence, our tarot year card connects numerology to the tarot to provide a basic forecast of the year ahead.

So, for 2024, we are of course in a Strength year. (2 + 0 + 2 + 4 = 8, the number corresponding to Strength in the tarot).

Now: we also have a personal year card for each year, which offers us a more individual theme for the year. I use Mary K. Greer’s method to calculate the personal year card (referenced in her books, Tarot for Yourself and Who Are You in the Tarot - but also reviewed here, by Benebell wen).

To find yours, you add the month and day of your birth to the current year, and keep adding the resulting digits together until you get a number under 23. That number corresponds with a Major Arcana card which is your personal year card (the Fool corresponds with 22). 

For example, my birthday is March 2. To calculate my year card for 2024, I follow this formula: 

3 + 2 + 2024

= 2029

= 2 + 0 + 2 + 9

= 13

I am in a Death year, because Death is the 13th card in the majors. This means that Death's themes - renewal, release, transformation, can be relevant in my year ahead and I can use this card's medicine for guidance as I move through the year.

While our overarching tarot year card (Strength) illuminates the lessons we can be moving through as a collective, our personal year card shows the lessons we can learn on an individual level. Our personal year card can advise us on how to move through the year so we can receive the rewards that only this particular theme can offer.
